Matatu owners association has come out to oppose the proposal by the government to regulate matatu fares.

According to Matatu Owners Association chairman Simon Kimutai, the government has no right to regulate fares

“The government has no right to regulate fares because when they regulate the passengers are the ones who will suffer and this move will kill the industry which is already making losses at the moment. “Said Kimutai

He further added that matatus fares  are regulated by market forces and they always have the interest of commuters

The cabinet secretary for transport James Macharia proposed that the government will be regulating fares for  public transport in order to try and bring sanity to the matatu sector which has been facing troubles in fares

Kimutai further said that the pricing of fares in matatus is regulated by demand and supply in the industry.

“I urge the government to corporate with stakeholders before coming up with such bills that affect the matatu industry to ensure they have solutions that will last long enough.”added Kimutai
