Government assures on meat in Nakuru after anthrax scare : The Standard

Published

on

The Nakuru county government has intensified inspection of meat products following reports of an anthrax outbreak in the county.
Public health officials have been dispatched to all sub counties to inspect meat supplied to butcheries and hotels to ensure it is safe for consumption.
The officers are working together with those from the veterinary department to inspect at least 1,000 licensed butcheries in the county.

“Locals should not fear buying meat in any licensed butchery because we have intensified inspection and the supply channel for safety,” Samuel King’ori, chief officer in charge of the Public Health department, said.
Two weeks ago, at least 14 people suspected to have contracted anthrax were treated at Elburgon hospital.
Samples were taken to Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) in Nairobi for testing but the results are yet to be released.
Symptoms of the disease in humans include swelling of eyes, lesions on the face, hands, cheeks and fingers.
“Nobody should consume meat that has not been inspected because evil-minded people can sell infected livestock meat that can lead to deaths,” said King’ori.
In 2016, at least 70 people at Lengenet village contracted anthrax after they consumed the carcass of a cow.
Besides inspecting meat, the health workers are also inspecting food joints, shops and supermarkets to ensure food safety.
Dr Enos Amuyunzu, county chief officer for Livestock, said at least 15,000 cattle have been vaccinated in Nakuru Town East Sub County. Other areas where vaccination is ongoing include parts of Njoro and Elburgon in Molo Sub County.
Amuyunzu has asked farmers to monitor livestock and report any signs of anthrax including high temperature, shivering or twitching, harsh dry coat, blood in dung or in nostrils, decrease or complete loss of milk and also dejection and loss of appetite.

At last, rains in Nairobi… – Nairobi News

Published

on

The heavens finally opened up in Nairobi on Saturday night and the city for the first time in 2019 experienced wet conditions.

In a welcome break from the continuous sweltering heat and dusty streets, Nairobi received a drench from above catching many people unprepared.

Hawkers who were selling their wares in the streets were caught unawares as the rain pounded the busy streets. Pedestrians and motorists were also in the mix -but no one seemed to care.

People were seen walking in the rain oblivious of the fact that they could get soaked.

Two hours before the rains started, the Kenya Meteorological Department had announced that it would rain in Nairobi and other regions.

“Showers and Thunderstorms expected on Sunday especially afternoon over Western Kenya, Southern and Central Rift Valley and Central Highlands including Nairobi. Moderate to heavy Rainfall expected over the same areas from Monday and throughout next week,” it said in a tweet.

BUSY

City residents who spoke to Nairobi News said that they did not expect it to rain.

“I did not expect it to rain and as I was busy going on with my business, the rains came down and was forced to seek shelter elsewhere,” said John Kimani, a hawker.

Ms Mary Auma said that she had not expected it to rain and was shocked when the rains started.

“I did not know that it would rain and had not even dressed warmly, I have to stay until the rains stop,” she said.

Last week, the meteorological department said that there will be no rains this season through the acting Deputy Director of Kenya Meteorological Department Bernard Chanzu.

Mr Chanzu even asked Kenyans to brace themselves for scarcity of water resources for drinking, sanitation and industrial use as well as for power generation.

Nairobians were relieved at the sight of rains.

Sudan investigating Bashir after currencies worth Ksh.729M found

Published

on

Sudan’s public prosecutor has begun investigating ousted President Omar al-Bashir on charges of money laundering and possession of large sums of foreign currency without legal grounds, a judicial source said on Saturday.

The source said that military intelligence had searched Bashir’s home and found suitcases loaded with different currencies: $351,000 (Ksh.35,591,400) and €6million (Ksh.684,237,060), as well as SD5million (Ksh.10,630,522).

“The chief public prosecutor… ordered the (former) president detained and quickly questioned in preparation to put him on trial,” a judicial source told Reuters.

“The public prosecution will question the former president in Kobar prison,” the source added.

Relatives could not be immediately reached on Saturday for comment about the investigation.

Bashir was ousted on April 11 by the military following months of protests against his rule and had been held at a presidential residence.

He is also being sought by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over allegations of genocide in the country’s western Darfur region,

Bashir’s family said this week that the former president had been moved to the high-security Kobar prison in Khartoum.

As president Bashir often played up his humble beginnings as the child of a poor farming family in Hosh Bannaga, a small village consisting mainly of mud houses on the eastern bank of the Nile some 150 km (93 miles) north of Khartoum.

The Sudanese Professionals’ Association, leading the protests, has called for holding Bashir and members of his administration to account, a purge of corruption and cronyism and easing an economic crisis that worsened during Bashir’s last years in power.

On Wednesday, Sudan’s transitional military council ordered the central bank to review financial transfers since April 1 and to seize “suspect” funds, according to state news agency SUNA.

The council also ordered the “suspension of the transfer of ownership of any shares until further notice and for any large or suspect transfers of shares or companies to be reported” to authorities.
