Fire ravages Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, spire collapses

Published

on

The fire, which began in the early evening, sent flames and huge clouds of grey smoke billowing into the Paris sky as stunned Parisians and tourists watched on in sheer horror.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately confirmed but the cathedral had been undergoing intense restoration work to help the 850-year-old gothic masterpiece better deal with the tests of time.

The flames and smoke plumed from the spire and roof of the cathedral, visited by millions of people a year.

Deputy Paris mayor Emmanuel Gregoire told BFM TV the spire “collapsed inwards” and that workers were scrambling “to save all the artworks that can be saved.”

A spokesman for the cathedral told AFP that the wooden structure supporting the roof was being gutted by the blaze.

“Everything is burning,” the spokesman for Notre Dame, Andre Finot, told AFP.

The fire service said the blaze could be “potentially linked” to ongoing renovations.

‘Emotion of a nation’

President Emmanuel Macron cancelled a major televised policy speech he was due to give on Monday evening over the “terrible fire ravaging Notre-Dame.”

He was to head to the scene in person, the Elysee announced.

In a tweet he expressed the “emotion of a whole nation” on seeing Notre-Dame ablaze.

“Like all my compatriots I am sad to see a part of us burn this evening” he said, expressing solidarity with “all Catholics and all French people.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Notre-Dame cathedral a “symbol of European culture” as the blaze raged.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo in a tweet described it as a “terrible fire”.

Vast clouds of grey-white smoke billowed round the cathedral as yellow flames still licked the top of the building.

There was no immediate indication of any casualties in the blaze.

“The Paris fire service is trying to control the flames,” Hidalgo wrote on Twitter, asking residents to respect the security cordon thrown up around the site.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the fire, which comes as French Catholics prepare to celebrate Easter, broke out at around 1650 GMT.

Fire trucks could be seen speeding through Paris towards the scene on the Ile de la Cite — an island in the Seine at the heart of Paris.

The Paris police department in a tweet called on residents to avoid the area and to “make way for rescue vehicles”.

‘Horrible to watch’

US President Donald Trump in a tweet said: “So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!”

Hundreds of people gathered on the bridges of Paris downriver to witness the scene, some filming the images with their smartphones, an AFP reporter said.

The cathedral had been undergoing intense restoration work which last week saw statues lifted from the top of the cathedral.

Built between the years 1163 and 1345, Notre-Dame is one of the most popular tourist sites in Paris, drawing around 13 million people every year.

The spire, like the rest of the gothic edifice, had been undergoing the 11-million-euro ($12.4-million) overhaul financed by the French state to repair damage inflicted by time, pollution and the weather.

US says N.Korean test not a ballistic missile

Published

on

“There was a test,” Patrick Shanahan, the acting defense secretary, told reporters as he met his Albanian counterpart at the Pentagon.

He declined to elaborate on the findings of US intelligence but said, “It’s not a ballistic missile.”

“Also there’s no change to our posture or to our operations,” he said.

North Korean state media earlier announced that leader Kim Jong Un had supervised the test-firing of a new tactical weapon with a “powerful warhead,” hailing what it called a contribution of “very weighty significance” to its arsenal.

Analysts have speculated that the test could have involved anything from a small anti-tank missile to relatively routine artillery, with a South Korean official also saying that the country saw no sign of a ballistic missile.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly boasted that North Korea has suspended both missile and nuclear tests since he embarked on diplomacy a year ago to ease soaring tensions.

Trump has met twice with Kim but their second summit, held in Hanoi in February, ended in deadlock with the United States insisting on full denuclearization before it eases sanctions.

Amid a standstill in talks, North Korea on Thursday both announced the test and demanded that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo be excluded from negotiations after he apparently encouraged Trump to stand firm in Hanoi.

Angolan leader cancels newly-awarded mobile phone licence

Published

on

Local company Telstar was last week awarded a license to operate the country’s fourth mobile network, valued at $120-million-dollars (106 million euros), beating 26 other local and international firms.

The tender will be reopened, said a statement from the presidency.

Telstar was established only in January 2018. Listed among its shareholders are army general Manuel Joao Carneiro and entrepreneur Antonio Cardoso Mateus.

According to Angolan weekly Expansao, the company has links to Mundo Telecomunicaçoes, an operator owned by several former ministers or advisers to ex-president Jose Eduardo dos Santos.

The profitable mobile telecommunications sector is currently shared between two private firms, Movicel and Unitel, the country’s leading operator.

Isabel dos Santos, the former president’s oldest daughter — believed to be the richest woman in Africa — holds a controlling stake in Unitel while her half-sister, Welwitschia dos Santos, holds a stake in Movicel.

A third operator, the state-owned company Angola Telecom, which is partially privatised, has recently tried to make inroads into the sector.

Lourenco swept to power in 2018 after pledging to clean up Angola’s endemic graft, tackle nepotism, and revive its listless economy.

He is opening up the telecommunications sector as part of plans to boost the economy of sub-Saharan Africa’s second largest oil producer, struggling to recover from the impact of a sharp drop in crude prices in 2014.
