ZURICH (Reuters) – Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) is seeing market conditions improve after a tough fourth quarter, Chief Executive Tidjane Thiam said on Tuesday as rival UBS (UBSG.S) reported disappointing fourth-quarter results.

“It was a really difficult Q4, you can see the results of our peers who have announced (amid) volatile markets,” Thiam told Bloomberg Television in an interview from Davos. “Overall things have gotten better since the beginning of the year, 2019 has started better,” he added.

Asked whether he was worried about client outflows amid market volatility, he said: “We have seen deleveraging, it was visible a bit in Q3 and Q4, but overall our assets under management have been very resilient.”

Arab and Africa youth discuss scientific research

Published

on

Arab and African youth are converging in Aswan, Egypt, from 16-18 March, to discuss the future of scientific research, healthcare services and the effects of technology and creativity in the Arab world and on the African continent.

They are meeting under the banner of the Arab and African Youth Platform (AAYP), which is part of the World Youth Forum (WYF). The forum is an international gathering held annually under the auspices of President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, the President of Egypt.

The youth will engage in session discussions, workshops and roundtable meetings throughout the forum, according to a press release from the WYF. Key among these discussions will be talks centred around how to benefit from the Nile Valley, as a means of cementing Afro-Arab relations.

Workshops will tackle the issue of developing the Sahel and promoting security and peace in this region of Africa. Seminars on entrepreneurship in an African context will also be held in addition to promoting the Youth Agenda. This meeting comes in the wake of Egypt’s assumption of the African Union’s chairmanship.

Participants will be treated to a trip to Aswan’s touristic and archaeological landmarks. The tour will also serve as a celebration of the city as the capital of the African youth in 2019. The city is Egypt’s civilization gateway to Africa. The first forum was held in 2017 and the second meeting brought together 5,000 youth participants from across the world in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2018.
